The Importance of Gum Massage

Jan. 01, 1970

Most people know that you should brush twice a day, and most people know that you should brush for about two minutes each time. More than 45% of the more than 40 American adults have some form of gum disease, according to the Center for Disease Prevention.

This includes gingivitis, plaque and the buildup of bacteria under the gums, leading to gum recession and exposure of the tooth roots. Gum recession can often lead to further problems as weak gums can lead to tooth decay, infection and abscesses.

If you have problems with gum recession, be aware of how you brush your teeth and see your dentist, especially if you are experiencing pain or bleeding. Many people learn how to brush their teeth at a young age and never question it again. However, if you do not learn the correct technique, you may end up causing damage by brushing hard, using the wrong brush or missing key areas.

How do I massage my gums?

There are a few different ways to massage your gums. The first involves your fingers and the second involves flossing with water.

Finger massage: When massaging your gums with your fingers, place your index finger on your dominant hand and apply light pressure starting at the base of the gums. Then move your finger in a slow circular motion. You should feel a little tension, but no pain. If you feel any pain, stop immediately.

Oral massagers help with oral hygiene and will not harm or damage your gums. If you want to get more information about the gum massage benefits, welcome to contact us today or request a quote.

Flossers: Flossers are not only great for getting trapped food out of your teeth, but they are also good for massaging sore gums. When using a water flosser for this purpose, make sure the water is slightly warm as it helps to soften the gum tissue. Then simply turn on the water flosser and move it around your mouth, focusing on your gums and making sure the pressure is not too strong or too weak.
